The area of Durham

Durham is a historic city situation within County Durham in the North East of England. The city is located on the River Wear, to the west of Sunderland and south of Newcastle Upon Tyne. The city of Durham was founded on the resting place of St Cuthbert, with the city’s famed Durham Cathedral being home to the shrine of the Saint. The cathedral and adjacent 11th-century castle were designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. In addition to the Cathedral and Castle, Durham contains over 630 listed buildings within its conservation area. In addition to the area’s rich architectural history, Durham is very popular for its regatta, which has been held on the River Wear since 1834 and is, therefore, the second oldest regatta in Britain.
