Client: Hessen Medical | Location: Oldham | Specification of Work: Roof and Wall Cladding | Project Length: 6 Weeks
Hessen Medical had growing concerns regarding the condition of the existing roof for their warehouse and office space in Oldham. Roofclad Systems were able to overclad the existing asbestos cement sheeted roof, remove and replace asbestos gutters and downpipes with a trimline gutter and PVC downpipes, all whilst the client was able to continue operations.
The client was rightly concerned about the age and condition of the existing asbestos cement roof at their warehouse and offices in Oldham. The client wanted to remain fully operational during the refurbishment of their roof which led them to opting to overclad the existing roof and replacing gutters and downpipes.
Our netting subcontractor rigged and secured a man safe net system under the roof area using mobile telescopic boom. All connections were knotted around primary truss members, temporary support ropes or other suitable anchorages.
Scaffolding subcontractors erected a triple handrail to all exposed roof edges in accordance with the Working at Height Regulations. An independent scaffold platform was erected inclusive of internal ladder access. We supplied all the necessary lightweight stagings in order to carry out the roof works in a safe and risk averse manner.
Prior to the new roof installation we carefully removed the redundant asbestos cement canopy roof sheets to the rear of the property and removed from site using a licenced waste removal company.
To the existing roof structure we installed galvanised steel support bars, secured through the existing roof to the existing main purlins with self-drilling fasteners. We Overlayed the existing asbestos cement profiled sheeting with a 220mm glass fibre insulation quilt.
Our operatives supplied and installed 0.7mm thick x 32mm deep profile, galvanised steel, Plastisol coated roof sheets, secured with nylon headed stainless steel self-drilling screws and side stitched with nylon headed stainless steel self-drilling stitchers. All side and end laps were sealed with butyl mastic sealing strip. External details included 0.7mm plastisol coated steel ridge, eaves, verge and apron flashing complete with polyethylene fillers embedded in sealant where required.
We removed the existing asbestos cement gutter, leaving in situ the existing boundary wall gutter as this gutter has recently been replaced. We installed a new trimline type plastisol coated steel eaves gutters including support brackets and outlets draining into existing pipes and complete with new stop ends.
The project involved covering over 50% of the existing rooflights whilst for the remaining 50% we supplied new Class 3 SAB grade 2.4 Kg/m² translucent GRP roof lights with a 34mm deep profile. These were secured to the new support bars with nylon headed self-drilling stainless steel fasteners complete with 32mm diameter washer and side stitched at 450mm centres with nylon headed stitchers.
