External wall cladding is a common part of a commercial or industrial building and protects it from the weather whilst keeping the inside warm and dry.

This guide will help you understand exactly what it is, why buildings need it, and the different types of cladding materials we can install.

What is exterior wall cladding?

External wall cladding is the outside layer of a structure that protects the exterior walls of a building from the elements and other environmental factors. It provides a long-lasting covering that acts as a layer of protection and thermal insulation and makes the aesthetic of the building more appealing.

The main type of wall cladding we install is plastisol coated steel profiled sheets that either form part of a built up system or come as a fully adhered all in one composite panel.

Why have external wall cladding?

Cladding can provide an additional layer around the external walls of your building helping to keep the weather out and the heat in. Cladding can be installed over existing brickwork or part of a built up system, consisting of an internal liner with an outer sheet with insulation inbetween.

Cladding panels act as an insulation shield that helps to regulate the temperature inside the building and keep fuel bills down.

Cladding can be a low-maintenance way of protecting your building from the elements, particularly if you’re located in areas prone to extreme weather conditions. It can also help to reduce noise coming in or out of the building, creating a better working environment.

The Advantages Of External Wall Cladding

  • Protects building from the elements
  • Improves thermal values
  • Increased aesthetic appeal
  • Reduce condensation
  • Cost effective
  • Range of colour and profile options
  • Low maintenance
  • Increase value of property

What Are Different Types of External Wall Cladding?

Wall Overcladding/Single Skin Wall Cladding

Sometimes referred to as ‘Single Skin’ wall cladding, this type of system can be more cost effective in comparison to other options. However, the external walls of your building need to be in good condition for it to be an effective solution.

Overcladding involves installing a new profiled metal skin over the top of the existing walls with insulation and support bars installed in between the two. The benefits include it being a simpler process that requires less labour and materials than other options with little or no disruption to the day-to-day running of your business.

Composite Wall Cladding

Using a composite material made from reclaimed wood fibre and recycled plastic makes it an eco-friendly option as well as one that stands up to extreme weather conditions. As it is a pre-made all-encompassing panel, it makes for a speedy external finish.

The quickness of the installation process for this type of cladding makes it a popular choice for businesses that don’t have time to be disrupted by building work. Composite panels are available in a range of coatings and insulation thicknesses with airtight technology that saves you time and money.

Composite cladding is easy to install and has excellent thermal values that can help to reduce your heating costs. Its insulation properties also make it effective in reducing noise and retaining heat.

Built-Up Wall Cladding

Traditional built-up wall cladding consists of an internal metal liner, an insulation layer, and an external face. This is the most traditional industrial wall cladding system that you are used to seeing.

It has a mineral wool core for insulation and a thin metal skin which helps to improve the thermal performance of the existing building, as well as adding value to it.

You can choose from several options for the external face, making it a versatile and bespoke cladding solution that allows you to personalise your building with a unique finish. In addition to this, the thermal performance or U-value can be built up to meet your exact needs.
