Asbestos roof removal, full roof replacement, improved thermal performance, new rooflight installation, and gutter refurbishment
Roofclad Systems was appointed by F. Parkinson to deliver a full roofing refurbishment to the Army Reserve Centre at Kingston Park, Newcastle, home to the 204 (Tyneside Scottish) Battery of the 101 Regiment Royal Artillery. With a project area of approximately 4,800m², the works were designed to address a series of longstanding issues impacting the building’s performance, safety, and usability.
The client required a new roofing system that delivered:
Roof condition surveys identified several critical issues:
Roofclad Systems delivered a fully managed roofing programme to meet the client’s performance requirements.
To protect personnel working both above and below the roof, we installed plain safe netting with debris protection in line with EN1263-2 standards.
In mezzanine office areas where netting access was restricted, air safety bags were used. Our contracts team conducted weekly inspections throughout the programme to maintain the highest safety standards.
Working in controlled bays, our operatives stripped the double-skin asbestos roof and re-sheeted the same areas in the same day, maintaining watertight integrity at all times. A total of 9,600m² of asbestos cement sheeting was safely removed and disposed of.
To significantly enhance the building’s thermal performance, we installed Kingspan QuadCore KS1000 composite panels featuring:
All flashings were manufactured at our in-house fabrication facility in the North East.
Approximately 320m² of new rooflights were installed using Kingspan KS1000 Safespan 150 Rooflight Systems, achieving a U-value of 1.6 W/m²K and arranged according to the client’s operational needs.
Two valley gutters were completely removed and replaced with Kingspan composite gutters.
External gutters were upgraded to Kingspan highline systems, designed to discharge into the existing downpipes for seamless integration.
Despite being delivered through winter—and facing severe weather challenges such as storm-force winds, frost, and heavy snow—Roofclad Systems completed the project safely, to programme, and without any health and safety incidents.
The completed works transformed the Army Reserve Centre’s roofing system, delivering:
This project demonstrates Roofclad Systems’ ability to deliver complex roofing refurbishments safely, efficiently, and to the highest industry standards—even under challenging seasonal conditions.
“Roofclad Systems were excellent from start to finish on the Kingston Park project. Their team worked safely and efficiently, managing asbestos removal and winter conditions without issue. The quality of the new roofing and gutter systems is outstanding, and communication throughout was first-class. We’d be happy to work with Roofclad Systems again.”
