14 Nov St Aidans Catholic Academy, Sunderland
Standing Seam Strip, Re-sheet and Felt Overlay
The school is situated in Sunderland. The project involved the refurbishment of the flat felt single storey roof where classrooms are located and the two storey twin skin GRP sports hall roof.
- 1300m2 Overlay of existing built-up felt roof.
- 740m2 Strip and re-sheet with Built up Standing Seam Roof System.
- 14 week contract duration.
The flat roof single storey building had been experiencing a large amount of water ingress through the felt roofs over a long period. The original roof had very low thermal value in comparison with today’s standards and a large amount of heat was being lost through the flat roof. Thus a combination of a roof that leaked in any inclement weather and one that resulted in excessive heating costs for the school through poor insulation.
The original roof had very low thermal value in comparison with today’s standards and a large amount of heat was being lost through the flat roof. Though this was an issue the biggest problem was the significant amount of water ingress coming into the building at numerous locations when any inclement weather occurred.
The twin skin GRP pitched sports hall roof had been experiencing water ingress into the sports hall which not only was a safety risk when using the facility it was a deteriorating the floor sports hall surface. Due to the roof only being double skin GRP there was a large amount of heat being lost. Lastly, the client had an issue with the noise from outside the building such as inclement weather and the noise pollution from inside the building such which was posed an issue for neighbouring properties and classrooms adjacent.
Roofclad provided a new Garland Specification 25 years to both the flat single storey felt roof and the sports hall pitched roof.
To the flat roof, a Garland felting overlay system was installed including a felt vapour control layer, a tapered insulation scheme, and a two-layer felt system thereafter. Incorporated within the roof are domed roof lights and composite cladded wall system where the Georgian wired glazing was situated. The Garland system used was a built up felt system with insulation meeting today’s building regulations.
The sports hall involved removing the existing double skin GRP roof and installing a Garland Standing Seam roof system. The system incorporated a perforated decking complete with acoustic battens and Rockwool 300mm insulation and finally the standing seam Aluminium stucco weather sheet.
The project was different from most schools as it was done within the school period as well as the holiday period. This involved close liaison with the School and Roofclad Systems. From start to finish a none working site foreman was used, which assisted significantly with liaising with the school, the site operatives, the scaffolding and safety netting sub-contractors and deliveries of materials to and from site.
The project finished two weeks ahead of schedule with the client extremely happy with the works conducted.
