Flat felt roof refurbishment
Roofclad Systems was appointed by NU Construction to fully refurbish the existing flat felt roof at Filey School, now known as Filey Academy, in Filey, North Yorkshire.
With a project area of approximately 1,300 m2, the works were designed to address multiple issues and improve the building’s performance. For this project, Roofclad Systems selected a Bauder specification.
The existing roof had reached the end of its serviceable life and was experiencing various issues, including water ingress, poor thermal performance, and leaking outlets into the internal
downpipes. The goal of the project was to provide a long-term roofing solution that would extend the roof’s lifespan, eliminate leaks, and significantly improve the building’s thermal efficiency.
To ensure safe access, Roofclad installed edge protection scaffolding, a Haki staircase, and a ladder gate, in line with the Working at Height Regulations.
A BBA Certified Bauder Total Roof System was installed using a combination of partial strip and overlay. The specification included:
A Cut-to-fall system to improve drainage was incorporated in the corridor area between redundant glazing, improving the flow of water towards drainage points and reducing the risk of standing water.
As the existing outlets were a key source of water ingress, they were removed and replaced with new spitter outlets through the perimeter upstand, complete with a lead chute and new external pipework.
The roof also included multiple rooflights. Four of them were replaced, and the remaining were boxed out and fully felted.
Bauder GRP trim was installed around all perimeter edges to complete the finish.
The completed refurbishment delivered a watertight, thermally upgraded roofing system, improving both building performance and long-term durability.
